La canción es sobre la soledad, personalizada en Eleanor Rigby, que es una mujer mayor que vive en soledad y que acude a las iglesias a recoger el arroz de las bodas con la vana esperanza de que un día ese arroz se lo echen a ella el día de su boda. El otro protagonista es el sacerdote McKenzie, a cuyas prédicas no acude casi nadie y por eso de poco sirve el pasarse la noche en vela preparando sus sermones porque nadie los va a oír. Al final ella muere en la iglesia de este sacerdote y nadie va al entierro, por lo que nuevamente, su sermón no sirve para nada y por eso no sirve para salvar a nadie.

La canción es por tanto un lamento sobre la vida en soledad.

- 1. “…wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door…” = Cuando sale de casa Eleanor pretende dar una imagen que oculte su soledad, de ahí que guarde esa máscara o cara junto a la puerta para ponérsela cada vez que salga de casa o cuando mire por la ventana por si alguien le ve.

- 2. “…darning his socks…” = El predicador se pasa las noches zurciendo los calcetines, por lo visto le salen patatas por las que asoman los dedos y no tiene quien los zurza por él.
- 3. “…buried along with her name…” = En lugar de “along” sonaría mejor “alongside”, ya que se refiere a que la entierran con su nombre en la tumba, aunque puede significar que con ella se entierra también su apellido por no haber dejado hijos que le den continuidad a su nombre.
