- Notas: Cuando Bruce Springsteen escribió esta canción tenía como manager a Jon Landau, el cual le presionaba para que escribiese algo que pudiese ser un nuevo éxito comercial. Esto chocaba contra el modo de componer de Bruce hasta el punto de que escribió esta canción para explicar la dificultad de escribir una canción y lo frustrante que era escribir canciones simplemente para que les gustase a la gente. La teoría que expone en la canción es que se siente como “un pistolero a sueldo” (“a gun for hire”) que tiene que componer canciones por orden de su manager y no porque le llegue la inspiración necesaria para componer un nuevo tema. Lo de “You can't start a fire without a spark” hace referencia exactamente a eso, que no se puede escribir una canción de éxito sin esa chispa inicial de inspiración que un artista necesita.

- 1. “…dump…” = Un “dump” es un vertedero de basura, aunque en este caso se usa para hablar de un hogar sucio y desordenado, usándolo como metáfora del estado mental en el que el cantante se encuentra.

- 2. “…carving you up…” = “To carve up” se usa para indicar el coser a alguien a puñaladas. Nuevamente el cantante lo usa de modo metafórico para indicar que en el mundo real todo el que pueda va a intentar destrozarte hasta destruirte por completo.
