Hasta una persona tan insensible como para comer bocadillo de higos chumbos sin quitarle los pinchos se daría cuenta de que es una canción de amor sobre un engaño o distanciamiento entre los amantes. El título “linger” (“quedarse, permanecer”) hace referencia a esa petición de la cantante a su pareja para que no se marche, para que deje que esa relación permanezca y sobreviva.

- 1. “… got me wrapped around your finger…” = Literalmente “me tienes envuelto alrededor de tu dedo”, esta expresión significa tener el control de alguien o poder manipularlo a voluntad como si fuese un muñeco sin voluntad propia.

- 2. “I thought the world of you” = Es una forma usada para poner énfasis en el cariño o aprecio que se le tiene a una persona, literalmente equivaldría a “ser más importante que el mundo entero” para una persona.

- 3. “If you could get by…” = “To get by”, un phrasal un poco complicado pero que se usa mucho y que significa “apañárselas” o “arreglárselas”, es decir “salir adelante” pese a las dificultades a las que uno se enfrente.

- 4. “… wanna …” = Es una forma coloquial de decir “want to” que aparece en muchas canciones. Si bien es una forma americana, aquí la emplea una cantante irlandesa.

- 5. “I’m in so deep” = Esta construcción se usa para indicar que alguien se ha implicado emocionalmente en algo hasta el punto de que por sí misma no se ve con fuerzas de salir de esa situación.
