contemplating a crime.

She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running

like a watercolor in the rain.

she'll just tell you that she came..

She doesn't give you time for questions

as she locks up your arm in hers

and you follow till your sense of which direction

completely disappears.

By the blue tiled walls near the market stalls

there's a hidden door she leads you to.

These days, she says, "I feel my life

just like a river running through".

Why she looks at you so coolly?

And her eyes shine like the moon in the sea.

She comes in incense and patchouli

so you take her, to find what's waiting inside.

Well morning comes and you're still with her,

and the bus and the tourists are gone,

and you've thrown away your choice and lost your ticket

so you have to stay on.

But the drumbeat strains of the night remain

in the rhythm of the new-born day.

You know sometime you're bound to leave her

- Notas: La canción es un relato sobre un hombre de negocios que vive siempre ocupado y que en esta ocasión vuela a un país oriental en viaje de negocios. Allí conoce a una mujer ante cuya belleza cae rendido. Para cuando quiere darse cuenta su avión de regreso ha salido y se da cuenta de que su vida ha cambiado a causa de ese encuentro. 

Lo del “year of the cat” pertenece a la astrología vietnamita, que va en un ciclo anual de 12 animales. El del gato se supone que es un año sin estrés, de cambios que llevan a la calma, como el hombre de negocios que descubre una vida sosegada donde no todo es trabajo.

- 1. “…Peter Lorre…” = Peter Lorre fue un actor que salió junto a Humprey Bogart en la película Casablanca.

- 2. “…like a watercolor in the rain…” = Los “watercolor” son las pinturas hechas con acuarela, que al mojarse (en la lluvia en este caso) se corren en chorretones largos deformando la imagen.

- 3. “…patchouli…” = El Pachuli es el olor de una planta que huele a vieja y a armario de los abuelos.

- 4. “…thrown away your choice…” = “To throw away” es un phrasal que se usa para indicar deshacerse de algo tirándolo a la basura, o en modo metafórico, como en este caso, tirar a la basura una posibilidad o tirar por la borda algo que podría haber sido muy positivo.

- 5. “…drumbeat strains…” = El “strain” es el tono, o melodía de un instrumento musical, y el “drumbeat” es e ritmo de un tambor. La expresión se refiere por tanto al tono de un tambor que es tocado marcando cierto ritmo.
- 6. “…you're bound to leave…” = “To be bound to” es una estructura muy usual, y formal para indicar el que algo tenía que pasar porque estaba escrito en el destino o porque por pura lógica no podía resultar de otro modo, como cuando te pones a descargar porno, viene tu pareja y justo en ese momento se bloquea el ordenador y no puedes salir del vídeo que estabas viendo.
