Pese a ser una canción muy conocida, el tema no está claro del todo, y hay varias hipótesis sobre qué narices es la “House of the Rising sun”. Según una versión es un prostíbulo que habría en Nueva Orleans, y la canción es una especie de narración de alguien que ha llevado una vida de perdición dirigida al oyente para que no cometa el mismo error. Otras versiones indican que la casa del sol naciente es una prisión que habría en esta localidad y la canción la canta un prisionero que es llevado a cumplir condena en ella, de ahí lo de la “ball and chain” que se ponía a los prisioneros para que no escaparan corriendo y para que pudieran partir nueces con ella, o almendras si eran más de su gusto.
- 1. “…gamblin'…” = “To gamble” es jugar a algún juego en el que se apuesta dinero, y gamblin’ es un modo de poner por escrito como mucha gente pronuncia gambling, comiéndose la g final.
- 2. “…he's on a drunk …” = La expresión parece inventada a golpe de martillo para que cuadre con la canción y significaría “estar bebido” o “llevar una melopea”.
