- Notas: Según indicó la cantante, la canción se inspira en una relación de pareja que tuvo y que acabó un año antes. La protagonista de la canción sigue "enganchada" a dicha persona, y de hecho se presenta por sorpresa a la puerta de su casa ("I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited") para comprobar personalmente que dicha persona realmente ha rehecho su vida (y que de hecho está casada), tras lo cual le desea lo mejor y por fin puede seguir adelante con su vida.
En la historia real, la causa de la ruptura fue la repulsa que él decía tener hacia el matrimonio, cuando a los dos años de dicha ruptura ya estaba casado con su nueva pareja.
- 1. “…settled down…” = Este phrasal es el equivalente en inglés a nuestra expresión "sentar la cabeza", que normalmente se usa para aquella gente que se casa, tiene hijos, compra casa, o consigue un trabajo normal. Es decir, para indicar que alguien ha optado adoptar los convencionalismos imperantes en su sociedad.
- 2. “…Ain't…” = Esta es una contracción muy coloquial que se usa en este caso como sustituto de "is not". Aquí se usa en el giro "is not like you", que sería algo así como "no es propio de ti".
- 3. “…hold back…” = Con el phrasal "to hold back" indicamos algo similar a "parar el carro" o detenerse por un momento en el camino antes de decidir por donde tirar. En este caso el reproche que le hace la cantante a ese hombre es que por una vez en la vida se haya decidido a hacer un alto en su agitada vida (probablemente para casarse y tener familia).
- 4. “…to turn up out of the blue…” = Aquí se junta el phrasal "to turn up", que significa "aparecer", con la expresión "out of the blue", que se usa que algo ha aparecido de la nada, o de un modo que era imposible de prever. En este caso es lo que ha hecho la cantante, presentarse a su casa sin previo aviso, completamente por sorpresa.
- 5. “…it isn't over…” = Con el giro "to be over" se indica que algo "se ha acabado", normalmente una relación o una situación.
- 6. “…haze…” = El "haze" es un tipo de neblina causada por distintos elementos meteorológicos, en este caso es el "summer haze", que es la calima.
- 7. “…bound…” = Para indicar la destinación de un tren, por megafonía suelen decir ese de "train bound to London", ese es el mismo "bound" que aparece aquí y que se usa para indicar que esto era algo que estaba destinado a suceder.
- 8. “…bittersweet…” = Este es ese sabor combinación de amargo ("bitter") y dulce que puede tener un plato, pero que normalmente se vincula con los momentos agridulces de la vida de alguien.
