- Notas: Esta canción tiene dos lecturas. Por un lado, tendríamos la lectura literal, según la cual se narra la historia de un náufrago ("castaway") que se encuentra solo en una isla abandonada, y que lanza mensajes en una botella esperando que le rescaten, hasta que un día se asoma a la playa y ve miles de botellas con mensajes de otros tantos náufragos que deben de compartir su misma situación. La otra lectura es la metafórica, según la cual el cantante vive en una gran ciudad y se encuentra aislado sin amistades ni contacto social con nadie, y un día al salir a la calle se da cuenta de que miles de habitantes de la ciudad experimentan esa misma vida de soledad y vacío. En esta segunda interpretación, los "message in a bottle" son los intentos de romper esa situación de soledad, que resultan infructuosos.
- 1. “…Castaway…” = Es el término que se usa como equivalente de nuestro "náufrago", aunque con la connotación de que tras el naufragio ha quedado solo y abandonado en un sitio solitario.
- 2. “…mend…” = Este verbo se usa para hablar de "reparar" algo que presenta desperfectos o no funciona adecuadamente. En este caso el cantante dice que el amor tiene la capacidad de "reparar" o "sanar" la vida de alguien que se siente solo.
- 3. “…washed up…” = Si bien "to wash" se usa para hablar de "lavar" algo, este phrasal, aplicado a un contexto de mar, significa "ser arrastrado por las olas" o "traído por la corriente" explicando como algo ha llegado hasta la orilla.
