- Notas: El tema de la canción es bastante claro ya que entender la letra no es que sea un arco de iglesia. Está dedicada a una mujer que busca salir del entorno opresivo en el que vive (“You don't fit in a small town world”) empezando una vida nueva en otra parte (con el cantante) y chocando con los planes que su familia tenía para ella (“A steady job and a nice young man, your parents had your future planned”). El cantante intenta animar a esa mujer a dar ese paso adelante porque el éxito depende tan solo de ella (“You can win if you want…”)

- 1. “…carpet-bag…” = El “carpet-bag” o “carpet bag” es un tipo de bolso grande que sirve como equipaje de mano para no tener que llevar una maleta a lomos y que originalmente estaba hecha con la misma tela y decoración que una alfombra (“carpet”), con colores chillones de esos que hacen daño a los ojos y pueden hasta causar cataratas solo de verla. Son del tipo que usaba la gente en el oeste cuando viajaba en diligencia cuando las maletas con ruedas no eran buena idea porque se enganchaban a los cactus o a los muertos en tiroteos.

- 2. “…brand-new…” = Este es un adjetivo muy propio de anuncios y similares porque no significa realmente nada más que “new”, ya que se usa para poner énfasis en que algo es nuevo, flamante, o como recién sacado de la caja en la que venía empaquetado.
- 3. “…steady job…” = El sueño de muchos es tener un trabajo estable (“steady job”) con contrato de por vida y sin tener que matarse a trabajar a ser posible.
